You can reach the castle thanks to a very modern panoramic lift standing on the hill of the Monte Castello. In just a few minutes you'll reach the entrance of the castle, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Etna, Taormina, the river Alcantara and the sea. Centuries of history, dominations, wars have followed one another inside the powerful, yet long neglected, walls. The intense excavations campaign has revealed that the castle had existed before the Arab period. In fact Greek finds (amphorae, coins, small statues and vases) witness the presence of the old Greek time colonization. Of special interest are the Byzantine skeleton of a soldier whose cast has been made, and the remains of a small Greek temple, the hall of the Cruyllas with its arch still showing the coat of arms of the Catalan family . The Cruyllas were lords of the place from 1396 to 1450, and the built also the small chapel. Another very important skeleton is housed in the castle: the probable remains of Giovannello Cruyllas, son of Giovanni, one the last lord of the castle.
